Can ultrasonic cleaning damage my parts?
With certain cautions, ultrasonic cleaning is considered safe for most parts. While the effects of thousands of implosions per second is very powerful, the cleaning process is safe since the energy is localized at the microscopic level. The most important cautionary consideration is the choice of cleaning solution. Potentially adverse effects of the detergent on the material being cleaned will be enhanced by the ultrasonics.
The liquid level should never drop below 50mm from the ultrasonic tank bottom as the increase in fluid temperature as a result of a low operating depth can cause damage to the transducer bonding. Heated ultrasonic cleaners should always include a thermostat control with immersion type heaters avoided at all costs. A gradual increase in temperature as a result of the ultrasonics is normal in all cases. Heavy or sharp objects should never be allowed to rest on the bottom or sides of the chamber but retained in a basket or racking system. This item supplied as standard with all unisonics ultrasonic cleaners.
The transducer and ultrasonic tank are part of an oscillating system which needs to be free of any contact to perform at maximum working levels. Hot fluids should never be poured directly onto the tank bottom as untold damage to the transducer bonding medium will render the ultrasonic cleaner inefficient and unreliable. Conversely when the ultrasonic cleaner has been operational for long periods a waiting time is required when introducing new fluid. This again is to avoid a hot/cold scenario between dissimilar materials.
